Couples Therapy in London

Couples therapy session with a therapist in London

Understanding the Relationship, Not Taking Sides

Couples therapy provides a structured space to explore difficulties within your relationship, understand recurring patterns and consider what needs to change.

The aim is not to decide who is right or wrong. Both perspectives are explored, with attention given to communication, behaviour, emotional responses and the dynamics developing between you.

Sessions can involve open discussion, questioning and respectful challenge, helping both partners consider not only what they need from each other, but also what each may contribute to the difficulties within the relationship.

This is important for your positioning. It also addresses the problem of one partner entering couples therapy expecting the therapist to validate their version of events.

How Couples Therapy Can Help

Couples seek therapy for many different reasons, including:

  • Repeated arguments and unresolved conflict

  • Communication breakdown

  • Emotional distance or loss of connection

  • Trust, jealousy or insecurity

  • Infidelity and relationship ruptures

  • Differences in needs, expectations or priorities

  • Intimacy and affection difficulties

  • Family, parenting or external pressures

  • Considering separation or the future of the relationship

Couples therapy does not assume that remaining together is always the desired outcome.

Therapy can also help couples understand their relationship more clearly and make informed decisions about what happens next.

How We Work Together

Couples therapy requires participation from both partners.

Sessions explore the relationship as a whole rather than treating one person as the problem.

We may look at how disagreements begin, how each person responds, what happens when communication breaks down and the patterns that repeatedly bring you back to the same difficulties.

My approach is integrative and may include psychological understanding, relationship-focused exploration and CBT-informed approaches where appropriate.

I may ask direct questions, highlight inconsistencies or respectfully challenge established ways of thinking when this could help you understand the relationship differently.

What to Expect

Couples sessions provide both partners with an opportunity to speak and be heard.

The initial session focuses on understanding the difficulties bringing you to therapy, each person's perspective and what you would both like to achieve.

Therapy may then focus on identifying patterns, improving communication, developing greater understanding and considering practical changes outside the therapy room.

Sessions can be short-term or ongoing depending on the complexity of the difficulties and your agreed goals.
