Aftercare & Continuing Therapy SupportAftercare & Continuing Therapy Support
Ending regular therapy does not necessarily mean ending the work you have begun.
Aftercare can provide a gradual transition from regular sessions towards greater independence, helping you reflect on progress, recognise recurring patterns and continue applying what you have learned.
What Is Therapy Aftercare?
Aftercare is an individually agreed plan for maintaining progress as regular therapy reduces or comes to an end.
Rather than stopping abruptly, we may review what has changed, identify areas that still require attention and consider how you can respond if familiar difficulties begin to return.
The aim is to support increasing confidence and independence rather than creating unnecessary reliance on therapy.
The Purpose of Aftercare
Aftercare may help you:
Consolidate insights and changes developed during therapy
Recognise triggers or recurring patterns earlier
Continue practising useful strategies independently
Prepare for future challenges or periods of increased stress
Decide when further therapeutic support may be useful
What an Aftercare Plan May Include
Aftercare is individual rather than a fixed programme. Depending on your circumstances, this might include:
Reduced Session Frequency — gradually moving from regular sessions to occasional reviews.
Review Sessions — reflecting on progress, difficulties and any patterns that may be returning.
Continued Practice — applying strategies, insights or changes developed during therapy.
Future Planning — recognising warning signs and considering what support you may need if circumstances change.
Booster Sessions — occasional appointments where further reflection or therapeutic input would be helpful.
Questions to Consider Before Ending Therapy
As therapy progresses, it can be useful to consider:
What have I understood or changed through therapy?
Which patterns am I now better able to recognise?
What situations could make those patterns more likely to return?
What strategies have been most useful to me?
How will I recognise when I may need additional support?
What would I like to continue working on independently?
These questions can form part of reviewing therapy together and planning what comes next.
Returning to Therapy
Life circumstances change, and completing therapy does not prevent you from returning in the future.
If new difficulties arise or you would like to revisit something previously explored, you can arrange a further session when appropriate.
